Çıkmaz Sokak Çocukları/Orphans at Bilkent Theater
The admirable play of Bilkent Theater, (Orphans), continues to be staged in February 2014
(20.01.2014, Ankara) - Bilkent Theater proudly announces Çıkmaz Sokak Çocukları (Orphans), a three-character play by the American playwright Lyle Kessler. The play is about two orphaned young brothers and their encounter with a rich, shady businessman; and is set in a shabby row house in North Philadelphia in 1980’s.
The play tells the story of Treat, the elder brother, played by Melih Efeçınar who looks after his younger sibling by petty thievery, and creates a protective environment for the seemingly slow Phillip (Koray Alper) who never leaves the house. The dramatic tension starts one night when Treat kidnaps a rich older man, Harold (Aytek Şayan), who has his own motives, but who eventually becomes a mentor and father-like figure for the brothers.
Directed by the acclaimed American director Jason Hale, who is currently a Visiting Asst. Professor at Bilkent Theater Department, Çıkmaz Sokak Çocukları will be produced as the graduation project for senior students majoring in theater at Bilkent. ‘Orphans is a play that has captured the heart of world audiences because the play is able to convey universal emotions within the circumstances of these very American characters. I am very proud of my student actors for their ability to let the audience enter into this extraordinary emotional journey,’ Hale says.
Orphans has enthralled critics since its debut in Los Angeles in 1983, and had successful runs across the US, the world theatres from Mexico to Japan to Turkey.
Translated into Turkish by Ali Neyzi as Çıkmaz Sokak Çocukları, the play is directed by Jason Hale and is starring Bilkent Theater Department fourth-year students Aytek Şayan, Melih Efeçınar and Koray Aydın.
